When you first begin making smoothies you may want to use your standard home blender. However, it is not a long-term solution if you really enjoy smoothies and want to have them every day.
You will find that standard home blenders don’t have the power to blend vegetables and coarse fruits to a smooth consistency. So if you use your home blender your smoothies will not be as tasty as they could be.
I learned this through lots of experience…after I moved up to a more high powered blender the improvement in taste and consistency of my daily smoothies was (I’m not kidding) about 1000%!!
Before I got a high powered blender I also burned up the motors on at least 3 standard home blenders.
A high-powered blender operates similarly to your standard home blender – the difference is that a high-powered blender will have the power to blend vegetables, coarse fruits (apples, pineapples) and easily blend in crushed ice.
There are many different brands, designs, sizes and for sure a big range of prices.
You can shop around and find a lot of different options. To help you with your search, here are a few recommendations on the smoothie blenders that I have found that work best for smoothies.

Standard Home Blender – such as an Oster Brand - the only low cost alternative I have found that works….
I can’t really recommend a standard home blender for making great fruit and vegetable smoothies. They just don’t have the power to create the taste and smooth consistency that a high powered blender can.
HOWEVER…..the professional version of the OSTER is the best lower cost blender I have found that can create a pretty good smoothie. It is a great blender to use until you can afford the blendtec or vitamix.

If you plan to drink healthy smoothies several times a week (or daily – like me) you owe it to your health and to your taste buds to get a blender that can create mouthwatering nutritious treats with no hassle.
There are two blenders that get my vote for creating the best smoothies.
One of my favorites is The Total Blender by Blendtec. I have used it for years and this blender creates some awesome smoothies, salsa, dressings and healthy nutritious raw vegan ice creams and icees.
The Total Blender is such a workhorse - I put it through its paces several times a day.
The Total Blender has really cool Smart-Touch technology - big words that simply mean that when a cycle button is pushed, the blender automatically speeds up and slows down, then shuts off when the cycle is done. This makes running through a blending cycle a totally hands free operation - you don't have to stop and start or adjust the blender to get your smoothie smooth.
This Blendtec blender has tons of power with 1500 Watts and can turn ice to snow – so I can make my favorite healthy coconut non-dairy ice cream and never be tempted by Haagen Dazs again! It also has a compact design so it fits nicely on my countertop under the kitchen cabinets.
One thing that might be considered a drawback with the Total Blender is that it does not include a tamper to help you push the food down into the blender (like the Vitamix)– this is important when you are blending coarse vegetables and fruits. However because the total blender automatically speeds up and slows down I RARELY ever have to stop my Total Blender and push the food down. So not having a tamper is not really a big deal when it comes to the Total Blender (Blendtec). However with the Vitamix you really need a tamper…..read about the vitamix below.
One more thing about the Blendtec Total Blender — it can be a bit LOUD unfortunately. So cover your ears or leave the room briefly when you use it. Next time you go into Jamba Juice — notice how they have covers they put over their blenders when they use them– now you know why.
The bottom line for Blendtec Total Blenders:
I use a blender every day for my smoothies and other healthy foods and I own both the total blender and the vitamix. And every single day I grab the total blender and use it before I use the vitamix. For me it is just easier to use and easier to clean and I love how the blender automatically adjusts the speed after I press just a single button. Customer service with the Blendtec company has been pretty great - they are very helpful. So now you have it….a review on the Total Blender from Blendtec ….from someone who blends every day

The Vitamix is also great for smoothies. I own the Vitamix 5000 and I do like it a lot - it my 2nd favorite after the Total Blender.
The vitamix is also an awesome blender and has tremendous power like the Total Blender. People swear by the vitamix and the following for vitamix users is almost cultlike - they love it so much.
One item that Vitamix has that the Total Blender does not have is the special tamper that pushes food down and never comes in contact with the blender blades — the tamper is a big time saver and saves you the hassle of starting and stopping your blender if you are blending dry or course items.
Also the Vitamix has a big longer of a warranty. I have never needed to call customer service so I don't know how responsive they are….however I have heard from other Vitamix users that Vitamix is very helpful and stands by their warranty and keeps their customers happy.

The Bottom Line….
Buying a blender with more power and durability may seem like a stretch to you.
It sure did to me when I started looking into getting one.
In fact, I stuck it out with the Osterizer Brand for years - the only problem was I was having to replace them often (burnt out motors) and they got stuck all the time trying to blend up coarse fruits and veggies (which are the bulk of what I blend!)
So I gave in, made the investment and it was like night and day using the higher powered workhorse blender. Blending took less time, my smoothies tasted so much better and I found out I could even make really healthy fruit sorbet and non dairy ice cream in minutes with it.
The investment of dollars became a small price to pay to save time, decrease the hassle, and improve the quality of my smoothies by at least 1000%.
Not to mention the investment I made in the health of myself and my family who enjoy this wonderful appliance 365 days of the year!
Add up the $ you may be spending at places like Jamba Juice for smoothies for you and your family and you will find that the cost of a high powered blender will actually SAVE you tons. And you'll finally get the high quality taste and consistency of those pricey smoothies you used to pay for!
To your health! Enjoy your Smoothies!

Small Personal Smoothie Blender
Tribest Personal Blender PB-200
This is a compact blender and makes single serve smoothies. It is simple to operate and easy to clean. It costs about $69. Tribest Personal Blender PB-200 - Click and Get Information and BEST Price
Here is my personal experience with the Tribest Personal Blender….
If you get one - be sure to get the 200 watt (not the 100 watt). I own the 200 watt one and I use it so I can have smoothies when I travel. It is great in a pinch (like when I am away from my heavy duty home blender) but it not great for everyday use especially if you plan to drink smoothies like I do. I have fruit and veggetable smoothies at least once each day….and sometimes twice.
